Tokyo 2020 Paralympics Competition Day 5: Hong Kong Foil Team Lost out a Podium Finish to Hungary
The fifth competition day of Tokyo 2020 Paralympics Games commenced. Hong Kong’s trio NG Justine Charissa, YU Chui Yee and CHUNG Yuen Ping competed in Women’s Foil Team pool events, winning Ukraine 45-34 and USA 45-14 before losing to Italy 32-45. Ranked second in pool, they proceeded to meet China Team in semi-finals and were defeated 33-45 and forced to bronze medal match against Hungary. The bronze medal match was a close affair between two teams and the lead exchanged hands. At the beginning of the last exhilarating bout, Hong Kong team trailed 37-40, fencer YU Chui Yee kept scoring to tie the game at 44-44. However, Hong Kong team lost just the last touch to Hungary and narrowly missed the podium. Wheelchair fencing team has completed all the events and will return home with Cathay Pacific Airways flight CX521 on Tuesday (31 August) in the afternoon and expected to arrive at 9:20pm (Hong Kong time).
The second round of pool matches saw BC4 player LAU Wai Yan Vivian and LEUNG Yuk Wing gain victories over Canada athlete Alison LEVINE 3-2 and Brazil athlete Marcelo dos SANTOS 14-0. However, teammate WONG Kwan Hang was defeated by Euclides GRISALES of Columbia 3-7, holding 1-1 win-loss record. BC2 player YEUNG Hiu Lam produced a strong display to defeat Japanese player Takayuki HIROSE 6-1 while HO Yuen Kei and TSE Tak Wah also overcame Brazilian representatives Evani SOARES da SILVA CALADO 8-1and Mateus CARVALHO 3-3 (tie break 1-0), both holding 1-1 win-loss record. Hong Kong team will compete in the last round of pool events with a hope to advance to elimination round.
CHAN Yui Lam touched the wall in personal best 1:25.02 in Women’s 100m Breaststroke SB14 heats. Ranked 11th in the event, she failed to proceed further.
